The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) division responsible for the East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait recently carried out a nuclear attack response and decontamination exercise.

A report on Tuesday 7 April from the state broadcaster CCTV said that the exercise took place at a naval base of the Eastern Theatre Command, however the report did not specify the precise time or location of the drill.

The Chinese PLA's Eastern Theatre Command is responsible for the defence of the eastern Chinese provinces and oversees the direction of Taiwan and the East China Sea opposite Japan, according to the South China Morning Post.

The exercise focused on rapid detection and decontamination, with CBRN defence units deploying handheld radiation detectors as well as uncrewed aerial vehicles to identify and monitor contaminated zones. Specialised teams screened both personnel and military vehicles to assess exposure levels, and a full decontamination simulation was also conducted. The original video report in Chinese can be viewed on the CCTV website here.

The exercise also included decontamination training. CCVT
