Eight children injured in landmine explosion in western Syria

Eight children were injured in a landmine explosion in the village of Al-Ankawi in western Syria on Wednesday 4 March. It was reported that the landmine had been planted by the now-deposed Assad regime and was left over from the Syrian Civil War.

Dr Osama Al-Aboud, the surgical emergency supervisor at Hama National Hospital, told the Syrian Arab News Agency that the hospital received six of the injured children, whose wounds ranged from moderate to serious, caused by shrapnel from the explosion.

He said that the hospital’s medical and nursing staff provided the necessary medical care, treatment and surgical interventions to the injured children. The two other injured children were transferred to Al-Suqaylabiyah National Hospital.

Landmines and explosive remnants left over from the Syrian Civil War constitute a significant challenge facing several areas in Syria.
