Elevated radioactivity detected at Prague university, police launch investigation
Czech firefighters recorded elevated levels of radioactivity from an unspecified object inside a building at Charles University in Prague’s Libeň district on Saturday evening, 14 February.
According to Radio Prague International, emergency services were alerted by an anonymous caller who reported a suspicious item at the university premises. The site is one of several facilities linked to the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, which operates a training nuclear reactor.
It is understood that the measured radioactivity did not pose a health risk, however the incident has been referred to the police and the State Office for Nuclear Safety.
Officers sealed off the room where the object was discovered and a criminal investigation into the suspected illegal handling of radioactive material has been launched.
