Five CBRN exercises take place across India in three days

At least five separate CBRN exercises coordinated by India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have taken place in the past three days in Bulandshahr, Bukaro, Mundali and Kolkata.

On 10 February, 9th Battalion Patna of the NDRF announced on X that they had conducted a mock CBRN exercise at Chandrapura Thermal Power Station in Bokaro, Jharkhand. Other stakeholders actively participating included the Central Industrial Security Force and representatives of the host site.

This announcement was swiftly followed by a similar post from 8th Battalion Ghaziabad of the NDRF, who announced that they had conducted a CBRN exercise at THDC Khurja Super Thermal Power Plant, outside Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh.

On 11 February, 4rd Battalion Cuttack announced they had participated in a mock exercise involving a chlorine tank leakage at WATCO Treatment Plant in Mundali, Uttar Pradesh.

Finally, on 12 February, 2nd Battalion Kolkata announced they had participated in two further exercises on the same day at Indian Oil Corporation Bottling Plant in Budge Budge, a suburb of Kolkata, as well as at Gopalpur Industrial Hub.

The former drill simulated an LPG tanker manifold failure and tested inter-agency response for chemical detection, vapour dispersion and specialised evacuation. The second drill tackled a simulated ammonia leak and practiced swift detection, effective shielding and safe evacuation, "enhancing safety protocols for a resilient India".
