India's Cochin International Airport conducts mock CBRN drill

India's National Disaster Management Authority, in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority, conducted a CBRN tabletop and mock emergency exercise at Cochin International Airport on 12-13 January.

The exercise simulated a chlorine gas leak inside the terminal resulting in a swift evacuation, with rescue operations led by the National Disaster Management Authority, fire suppression by the aircraft rescue and fire-fighting team at Cochin International Airport, and safe disposal as per established standard operating procedures.

The drill involved coordinated participation from the National Disaster Management Authority, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, the National Disaster Response Force, Kerala Police, the Central Reserve Police Force and other stakeholders.

"This drill strengthened operational readiness for CBRN scenarios, ensured seamless inter-agency coordination, validated emergency response standard operating procedures and enhanced situational awareness and risk mitigation across all stakeholders," according to the Airport Sector of India's Central Industrial Security Force.
