Kenya, EU convene stakeholders workshop on radiation protection, nuclear medicine
The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), in collaboration with the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative, convened stakeholders for a workshop on strengthening radiation protection and safety in radiotherapy and nuclear medicine in Kenya on Wednesday 8 July.
Posting on X, the KNRA said that the two-day event brings together KNRA, the Government Chemist Department, the EU CBRN CoE Initiative, healthcare institutions, radiation safety officers, medical physicists, regulators and development partners to strengthen radiation protection, regulatory compliance and safety.
William Munyoki, government chemist and national focal point for the EU CBRN CoE Initiative, said the workshop advances Kenya's national CBRN action plan through stronger preparedness, regulatory frameworks and collaboration.
Louis Dey, programme manager at the EU Service for Foreign Policy, reaffirmed the EU's commitment to strengthening radiation protection and regulatory capacity, while Dr Patricia Gitari, on-site assistance expert, highlighted the regional CBRN Risk Mitigation Initiative.
KNRA director-general, James Chumba reaffirmed KNRA's commitment to strengthening safety culture through stakeholder engagement, capacity building and training to improve regulatory compliance, patient outcomes and safer practices.
Participants discussed regulatory oversight, safety standards, licensing, inspections, quality assurance, emergency preparedness, occupational exposure, radioactive waste management and incident reporting. Day 2 will focus on patient protection and priority actions.
