Mysterious gas leak near Jammu Airport, Proengin detection equipment used
A mysterious gas leaked from a cylinder at a scrap dealer's shop on Saturday 7 February near Jammu Airport in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir state.
According to local media reports, several residents of Rani Bagh suffered from breathlessness following the sudden leakage of gas from an abandoned cylinder lying at the scrap dealer's premises.
Joint teams from the Indian National Disaster Response Force, the regional State Disaster Response Force, police, fire and emergency department personnel rushed to the scene, where they successfully contained the leak wearing full protective gear.
CBRN teams responding to the leak were spotted using the Proengin AP4C universal chemical detector. In a post on LinkedIn, the company said it was an "honour to accompany and support CBRN responders worldwide, helping them operate with confidence when every second counts".
Investigation launched
An investigation was initiated to determine the nature of the gas and how the cylinder ended up at the scrap dealer's shop. However, as of Monday 16 February, the nature of the gas is not yet public knowledge.
The gas will be identified through scientific analysis, and further action will be taken accordingly, officials said, however they did not rule out the possibility that the gas could be a hazardous chemical, including the likes of sulphur mustard.
Separately to the incident, many battalions of the Indian National Disaster Response Force have recently been conducting CBRN training exercises across the country. You can read more about these on Exposure Report, here.
