At least 23 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a triple IED explosion in the city of Maiduguri, in Nigeria's northeastern Borno State, at 19:24 on Monday evening, 16 March.

Borno State Police Command's public relations officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said that a joint team of security operatives was immediately deployed to secure the affected areas and prevent further attacks. The affected areas were cordoned off and swept by the explosive ordnance disposal unit to eliminate any additional threats.

The coordinated attacks took place at Maiduguri Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the Post Office Flyover area. Preliminary investigation revealed that the incidents were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and bring perpetrators to justice, according to local police.

Monday's explosions were the latest incident highlighting persistent insecurity in Borno State, where insurgents continue to launch attacks against military and civilian targets, despite ongoing military operations in the region.

A vehicle-borne IED attack on a military formation of the Nigerian army on 20 January killed at least eight soldiers and wounded 50 others.
