Police in the Indian state of Manipur recovered fifty improvised explosive devices on Friday 20 March alone, a series of announcements has revealed.

Posting on their Facebook page, Manipur police announced that they recovered 12 IEDs from Yangoubung village, 29 from the general area between Loisi village and Saivom village, and nine from the SL Zougam area.

Manipur police said that the IEDs recovered from Yangoubung village and from the SL Zougam area "were destroyed in situ by following safety protocols and standard operating procedures".

Other items recovered during the operations on 20 March in Manipur state included a grenade launcher, pistols, magazines, grenades, electric detonators, ignitor fuses, live rounds of ammunition, rifles and radios.

Manipur has experienced prolonged ethnic violence since May 2023 after the Meitei community demanded "scheduled tribe" status. A protest march led by tribal groups who saw the demand as an existential threat spiralled into retaliatory violence, arson and killings.

The unrest has so far claimed at least 260 lives, including civilians from the Kuki and Meitei communities and security personnel. Thousands of people have also been displaced.
