Georgian firefighters, first responders conduct CBRN exercise at chemical plant
Firefighters and emergency first responders belonging to the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs' Emergency Situations Management Service have conducted a three-day full-scale CBRN exercise at a chemical plant in Rustavi, south-east of the capital city, Tbilisi.
According to the Georgian public broadcaster 1TV, the training, which took place on 21-23 April, "aimed to improve the ability to respond to CBRN threats and incidents, as well as to strengthen interagency and international coordination".
The exercise was hosted at the Rustavi Azot Indorama chemical plant and was based on a simulated chemical incident scenario. Conducting the exercise on the territory of the plant gave participants the opportunity to observe the actions of both the company’s internal services and external emergency response agencies, according to the company.
A field operations command centre was also established so that representatives of Rustavi Azot Indorama and partner agencies could work together in a unified operational environment.
International partners
The exercise involved a number of international partners, including the CBRN response unit of the Rescue Service of the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as representatives from international partner organisations from the UK, Belgium, Czechia, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
Georgian state institutions were also involved, namely the Emergency Management Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Rustavi City Hall, as well as members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia, international experts and the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus.
Rustavi Azot Indorama wrote that preparedness for critical situations "is a responsibility towards people, the environment and society", adding that trainings such as these "provide an opportunity to test resources in conditions as close to real-life scenarios as possible, while also strengthening cooperation with state institutions and international partners".
