During the night between Friday 17 and Saturday 18 April, an Italian civil defence CBRN exercise took place at Poggio Mirteto Scalo station, at the initiative of the Prefecture of Rieti in collaboration with the Italian State Railways Group.

According to information published by the Italian Interior Ministry, the exercise simulated an attack on a train with explosive radioactive gas devices, resulting in simulated injuries to some passengers and the death of the attackers.

The scenario allowed teams to test their civil defence plan for the province of Rieti, which is currently being updated with the aim of defining the procedures and resources that can be activated locally in the event of a CBRN emergency in greater detail.

"At the same time, the Italian State Railways were able to verify the effectiveness of the procedures established for the rescue and assistance of travellers following a terrorist event, while the Rieti local health authority tested the effectiveness of its planning for emergency medical assistance in CBRN events," the news release said.

The exercise began at 23:30 and concluded at approximately 04:30, and involved the participation of various units, coordinated by the Prefecture of Rieti as part of the Provincial Civil Defense Committee.

These units included: the Fire Brigade, the Joint School for NBC Defense, the Rieti Local Health Authority, ARES 118, the Municipalities of Poggio Mirteto and Fara Sabina, the Rieti Police Headquarters, the Poggio Mirteto Carabinieri, the Guardia di Finanza, the Highway Police, the Orte Polfer (Federal Police), the Italian Red Cross, the Regional Civil Protection Emergency Directorate, and NUE 112 through the Civil Protection Volunteers and FS Group companies.

An initial assessment of the activities was conducted at the end of the exercise and a detailed analysis of the operations will follow to identify further areas for improvement.
