The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) of Uganda to strengthen regional nuclear safety and security.

Announced on LinkedIn on Tuesday 24 March, KNRA said that the memorandum is "a strategic initiative to boost the regional capacity for managing nuclear and radiological safety".

"The partnership is designed to facilitate the sharing of regulatory experiences and operational best practices between KNRA and AEC. It reflects shared commitment by the two countries to strengthen cooperation in peaceful use of nuclear and radioactive materials in health, agriculture, industry and energy sectors," they said in the announcement.

The director general of the KNRA, James Chumba, expressed optimism that this was the beginning of closer cooperation between the two entities and welcomed the opportunity to formalise activities that strengthen the partnership.

On his part, Noah Luwalira, director general of Uganda's AEC, described the signing of the memorandum as timely and strategic, providing a structured framework for sharing experience and expertise, building capacity and technical competence, and strengthening nuclear systems.

AEC chairman, Obwoya Kinyera Sam, noted that the memorandum was "anchored in mutual benefit, equality and reciprocity, which are essential in building trust and achieving sustainable progress".

Also in attendance at the signing ceremony were Apwano Charity and Emmanuel Rwothumio of Uganda's AEC, as well as Beth Mushi, Patrick Ataro and Edward Mayaka of Kenya's KNRA.
