Troops in the Nigerian armed forces have successfully cleared a total of 11 IEDs from a long-abandoned road in Imo State, southern Nigeria.

As reported by Vanguard, the director of defence media operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said that troops conducted a successful route clearance operation along the Eketutu–Uda axis in the Orsu local government area.

The clearance operation reopened a road that had been abandoned for three years due to the activities of members of the proscribed group, the Indigenous People of Biafram, and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.

Onoja said that during the operation on 7 March, troops discovered and safely demobilised eight improvised explosive devices planted along the route. He added that troops returned to the area on 8 March to continue the clearance operation, during which three additional IEDs were detonated along the Eketutu Market axis.

He noted that the operation significantly improved access and safety along the road corridor which had been deserted for years. Troops also recovered magazines loaded with ammunition.
