Chemical, biological and radiological units of the Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine recorded over 400 cases of Russia using chemical munitions against Ukrainian positions in March 2026.

More than 13,000 cases of Russia using dangerous chemical substances have been recorded since the start of their full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine report that Russian troops "systematically use dangerous chemical substances with an irritating effect" as well as "traditional means of fire damage" during their invasion.

"The enemy uses K-51 and RG-Vo type gas grenades, as well as improvised containers equipped with CS and CN substances," the announcement released on 4 April read. Munitions are most commonly dropped on Ukrainian positions from uncrewed aerial vehicles to force soldiers to leave shelter, giving Russian forces a tactical advantage.

Also known as riot control agents, CS and CN gas are used in some countries by law enforcement agencies in peacetime for policing purposes, including crowd control. However, according to paragraph 5, article 1 of the Chemical Weapons Convention, of which Russia is a state party, the use of riot control agents as a method of warfare is prohibited.

Although not included in the list of lethal combat toxic agents and not causing damage to equipment or personal protective gear, they do cause "severe irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract, tearing, coughing, choking, disorientation and temporary loss of combat capability".
