South African Booyco Engineering to strengthen presence in CBRN, defence sector
The South African company Booyco Engineering has announced it is strengthening its presence in the global defence sector with advanced industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning solutions tailored for specialised military applications, including CBRN filtration.
Speaking to Engineering & Mining Africa Magazine, executive director of Booyco Engineering, Grant Miller, said that the company had recently delivered complex cooling systems for radar jamming shelters as well as next-generation military amphibious vehicles. He attributed the company's progress to their "extensive engineering expertise and established track record in delivering mission-critical HVAC technologies".
"We engineer our systems to suit the particular demands of complicated military equipment, designed for the harshest conditions while still meeting onerous specifications," Miller said.
Notable projects
Booyco Engineering recently integrated customised HVAC systems into hard-skinned radar jamming shelters manufactured in South Africa by ADG Mobility for export markets. These shelters, built on an ISO-container footprint, are designed to house sensitive electronic equipment, radar interference systems and ballistic protection capable of resisting light arms fire.
To address stringent requirements in line with US military standard 461F, Booyco Engineering developed an HVAC solution that can operate between -40°C and 55°C and incorporates CBRN and cyclonic dust filtration to perform in high-particulate environments. It also features integrated sensors, onboard carbon dioxide monitoring and advanced digital scroll compressors to maintain precise thermal control for sensitive equipment.
In another international project, Booyco Engineering is working with a Southeast Asian government to supply a specialised HVAC solution for a modern 8x8 amphibious infantry fighting vehicle. This system is designed to function between -10°C and 49°C, while also incorporating CBRN filtration and enhanced environmental protection.
"The CBRN system protects occupants of the vehicle from harmful gases or chemical agents," Miller explained. "The filtration activates and removes harmful particulates and gases through high efficiency particulate air and carbon filters to protect both the crew and the vehicle’s electronics."
The company’s almost 15-year relationship with the client has supported the development of systems capable of performing in extreme operational and climatic conditions. The current project includes the delivery of a full prototype along with several pre-production units for qualification testing.
About Booyco Engineering
Booyco Engineering specialises in the design, development and manufacture of HVAC systems for military, railway and mining applications, established in South Africa in 1985.
The company has designed, developed and manufactured HVAC systems, filtration systems and auxiliary power units for military vehicles such as the G6 self-propelled howitzer, RG12 riot control vehicle, RG31 mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle, Terrex 8x8 armoured fighting vehicle and the Belrex family of mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles. Booyco Engineering has also designed, developed and manufactured crew HVAC and electronics cooling systems for military shelters.
The US Marines and Singapore Armed Forces are named on their website as two past recipients of their HVAC systems integrated into armoured personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles.
