Two teenagers detained in Ukraine on suspicion of planning IED attack
The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), in cooperation with the police, has detained two 16-year-olds suspected of planning an IED attack on a vehicle used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
In a statement released on their website on Monday 23 March, the SSU allege that the two residents of Poltava manufactured an IED intended to be planted underneath a military vehicle and remotely detonated when servicemen approached.
They added that the attempted attack had been organised by Russian intelligence services, with the two minors having been recruited by Russian handlers.
"The teenagers were recruited through Telegram channels offering 'easy money'," according to the SSU. "They received step-by-step instructions from a Russian handler on how to manufacture the device using available materials. They were also instructed to locate the targeted military vehicle and receive approval from the handler."
"The SSU Counterintelligence identified the threat at an early stage and apprehended the suspects in a hotel room where they were assembling the explosive device."
Law enforcement seized the IED along with mobile phones containing evidence of the crime during searches. The two teenagers have been detained under suspicion of the crimes of "preparation of a terrorist act committed by a group, by prior conspiracy" and "intentional destruction or damage to property".
The suspects face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
